Nagpur: On Monday afternoon, 22-year-old Atul Kharat died after being knocked down by a truck at Awari Square near Reshimbagh. As he was wearing a helmet, he suffered no head injuries, but Kharat died as he came under the wheels of the truck.
Kharat, a resident of Shiv Shakti Nagar in Hudkeshwar, was a third-year student of Bachelors of Ayurvedic Medicine Surgery.
He leaves behind parents and a younger brother, Rahul.
Family members said that Kharat was returning home from his friend’s house at Sakkardara on his two-wheeler. “On his way from Reshimbagh to Awari Square, a truck hit him from behind and Kharat lost control over his vehicle and came under its wheels,” said a relative.
Eyewitnesses said that Kharat was dragged for 15 metres by the truck. By the time the truck driver managed to apply the brakes, Kharat was unconscious. They alerted the police control room who then informed the Sakkardara police station.
The cops rushed Kharat to the Government Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. “Though the helmet saved him from head injuries, his lower body was totally damaged. The doctors declared him dead at 3.45pm,” said a relative.
Kharat’s death has shattered his family members. His father, Devendra is a doctor at Lodhikheda, Madhya Pradesh, while his mother, Jaya is a homemaker. Relatives said that like his father, Kharat also wanted to be a doctor.
Sakkardara police has registered a case against the accused truck driver, Jaisingh Bisen, 47, a resident of Kharbi.
Recently, helmets being made compulsory had saved two traffic constables from head injuries at Mhalgi Nagar Square when a speeding truck had knocked them down. Both were wearing helmets.
